Planning a Wedding? Here’s Why Couples Book LASIK in October

Computer vision syndrome explained: Symptoms, causes, and practical desk adjustments that work

If you want LASIK before your wedding, aim to have it at least 4 to 6 weeks before your first function. Start the eye check-up 2 to 3 months ahead, which is why many couples marrying this winter begin in October.

There’s a moment in almost every wedding planning conversation in Delhi NCR where someone says, “I just don’t want to wear glasses in the photos.” Contact lenses through a 12-hour sangeet, under stage lights and a heavy dupatta, aren’t much fun either.

That’s why eye clinics see a spike in LASIK enquiries every October as the wedding season begins. If you’re considering it, here’s a practical, no-pressure guide to the timing.

Why October is the right time to start

Delhi NCR’s main wedding season runs roughly from November to February. Working backwards:

• Your eyes need a full evaluation before anyone can say whether you’re suitable.

• If you wear contact lenses, you’ll need to stop wearing them for a while before those tests, because lenses temporarily change the shape of the cornea.

• After surgery, you want enough time for your vision to stabilise and your eyes to stop feeling dry before the functions and photographs.

Starting in October leaves room for all of this without rushing. Rushing is the one thing you don’t want with eye surgery.

Your LASIK-before-the-wedding timeline

3 months before: get your eyes tested. Check that your prescription has been stable for at least a year. If it keeps changing, surgery may need to wait. An eye test at home is an easy first step that doesn’t eat into your planning weekends.

10 to 12 weeks before: pause your contact lenses. Your surgeon will tell you exactly how long. Soft lenses are usually stopped for at least a week or two before the detailed tests; toric and rigid lenses for longer.

8 to 10 weeks before: detailed pre-surgery tests. Corneal mapping, corneal thickness, pupil size and tear film tests decide whether LASIK, SMILE or another option suits you. If you’re unsure about the differences, our guide to SMILE vs LASIK vs CLEAR explains them in plain language.

6 weeks or more before: the surgery. This leaves a buffer for normal healing and any follow-up you might need.

The 2 weeks before the wedding: don’t book surgery here. If the dates don’t work, it’s perfectly fine to wear glasses or contacts for the wedding and have surgery afterwards.

What recovery really looks like

The procedure itself takes only minutes per eye. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, most people have good vision soon after LASIK. With SMILE, vision often takes a few days longer to reach its sharpest.

The AAO’s guide to laser surgery recovery describes what’s typical in the first weeks:

• Day 1: Eyes may feel scratchy or watery. Rest, and use your prescribed drops.

• First week: Wear protective shields at night, avoid rubbing your eyes, and keep away from dust and smoke.

• First few weeks: Some dryness, glare or halos around lights at night are common and usually settle gradually.

• Up to 3 months: Vision continues to stabilise, and dryness usually improves further.

Wedding-specific things nobody tells you

Eye makeup. Most surgeons ask you to avoid eye makeup for at least a week after surgery, and longer for false lashes and lash extensions. If you’re the bride, plan your makeup trials accordingly and tell your makeup artist about your surgery date.

Haldi and dust. Keep haldi paste, powders and confetti well away from your eyes in the first weeks. Pre-wedding shopping trips through crowded markets, and the construction dust that seems to follow every Delhi wedding venue, are reasons to wear sunglasses.

Stage lights and camera flash. Night glare and halos are common early on. If your sangeet or reception is within a month of surgery, bright stage lights may feel uncomfortable. That’s one more reason to leave at least six weeks.

The honeymoon. Swimming pools, the sea and hot tubs should wait for at least a couple of weeks, often longer. Pack good sunglasses and lubricating drops if you’re heading to a beach.

Family planning. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change your prescription, and laser eye surgery isn’t done during them. If you’re planning to start a family soon after the wedding, having the procedure first may make sense. Discuss your plans honestly with your surgeon.

Is LASIK safe enough to do before a big event?

For the right candidate, laser vision correction is one of the most commonly performed and well-studied elective procedures. But it’s still surgery. The US FDA’s LASIK resource is a good, balanced read on risks and on when the procedure may not be right for you.

A trustworthy clinic will tell you if you’re not a good candidate, or if your timeline is too tight. If anyone pushes you to have surgery in a hurry because your wedding is next week, walk away.

Start with an eye test, not a surgery date

You don’t need to commit to anything today. The first step is just to know where your eyes stand: your current prescription, how stable it is, and whether there’s any dryness that needs treating first. EyeSetu can check this at home, and if you decide to go ahead, our SurgiSetu team can coordinate the pre-surgery workup and surgery at a partner hospital.

Book an eye test at home in Delhi or Gurugram and give yourself enough time to make an unhurried decision.

Frequently asked questions

How long before my wedding should I get LASIK?

At least 4 to 6 weeks before your first function, with the evaluation starting 2 to 3 months ahead. Avoid scheduling surgery in the last two weeks before the wedding.

Can I wear eye makeup after LASIK?

Most surgeons advise avoiding eye makeup for at least a week, and false lashes or lash extensions for longer. Follow your own surgeon’s instructions, as advice varies by procedure.

What is the recovery time for LASIK compared with SMILE?

Most people see well within a day after LASIK. After SMILE, it can take a few days for vision to become fully sharp. With both, mild dryness or night glare can take a few weeks to settle.

Can I have LASIK if I’m planning a pregnancy?

Laser eye surgery isn’t done during pregnancy or breastfeeding because hormones can change your prescription. If you’re planning a family soon, discuss timing with your surgeon; having it done beforehand is often an option.
